Alert! Vets Warn About Treats Poisoning Pets

"Petco, one of the country's largest pet retailers, announced Monday that it has pulled all Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its shelves, citing concerns that the foreign made pet foods could be linked to a series of yet unexplained sicknesses and deaths among pet dogs in the United States. The move, the first by a national pet store, comes despite the FDA's inability to tie the illnesses specifically to Chinese-made pet foods. And there's reason to believe it might signify the beginning of a swift industry-wide precautionary movement away from such imports."   Source:  The Washington Post January 6, 2015

And yet,  recently, a coworker's young dog experienced kidney failure and found out that these treats are still in the stores for sale! Even though they may say "made in USA" the ingredients may still be sourced in China and merely assembled here.

101 Dog Friendly Stores, Restaurants, Hotels & Airlines

Source:  The Naked Dog Post

Since our dogs are family, we think it’s only appropriate that they should join us on trips to the store, hotel, and restaurant patio. As the rest of the world comes around on this sentiment, though, it’s still hard to know exactly where you’re allowed to take your pup when you go out on the town, or just to run errands. How can you know which places are dog-friendly?

So instead of guessing and hoping, check out this massive, yet well-organized list of major chains that allow dogs to join in the festivities!

Free Pet Adoptions!

Photo credit & source info from Patch.com

Its the perfect time for your family to adopt a new pet from Orange County's OC Animal Care, the county run animal services center.  Adoption fees will be waived for qualified applicants.

Based in the city of Orange, the OC Animal Care is county run, and has been operating at over 95-percent capacity for nearly a month, since they took in a large quantity of rabbits from an area residence.

The facility is currently housing approximately 630 animals.

According to the shelter, that is over 200 more animals than the services typically works with.

“High numbers of animals increases the impact on the physical and mental health of shelter animals,” Dr. Jennifer Hawkins, director of OC Animal Care said. “By removing fee barriers to adoption and encouraging visitors to the shelter, it is our goal to unite adoptable shelter pets with families.”

On October 25, the Orange County supervisors agreed in unanimous vote to authorize OC Animal Care to waive adoption fees anytime its animal population grows more than 80 percent of capacity. The free fees will continue until it drops below 60 percent.

Adoption fees normally average $167 for dogs, $171 for cats and $77 for rabbits.

That cost covers spaying and neutering animals, veterinary services, implanting and registering microchips, and administering vaccinations.

Take note, even with the fee waiver, adoptive families of their new pets will still have to pay for a rabies-vaccination certificate to the tune of $27.

No animals can be surrendered at the shelter until the number of animals in residence drops back to 60-percent.

Notes from Happy Students

Hi Frances,
I want to thank you for the class today. My road to developing my intuitive abilities has been a bumpy one thus far, and after this last week I was feeling pretty vulnerable and defeated, not sure if I wanted to keep going with it. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come today,as I was very down this morning,  but I’m so glad I did, as it put the wind back in my sail. The exercises we did were fun and easy to do, you were so kind and calming. The messages I received from Isabelle and her mom were very healing. It was wonderful to be in a group with such lovely people. Thank you so much again, you are amazing! ~ J

Should I Smash a Window?

The "Right to Rescue" act provides legal immunity for a person who damages a car in a good faith effort to save an animal from dangerous conditions while trapped in a hot car.

The Right to Rescue Act" will save lives. We all know how hot our cars get sitting in the heat, but so many people don’t recognize that leaving your dog in the car for even a few minutes in these conditions can be fatal.  More than anything, we hope that AB 797 will raise awareness of this danger so pet owners remember to leave their dogs at home.” - Assemblyman Marc Steinorth

To receive legal immunity, a person must comply with all of the following requirements:
  1. Determine the car is locked or there is no other reasonable method to remove the animal from the vehicle;
  2. Have a reasonable and good faith belief that the animal is in imminent danger if not immediately removed;
  3. Contact law enforcement prior to entering the vehicle;
  4. Use no more force than necessary to enter the vehicle; and,
  5. If the person does enter the vehicle, the person must remain nearby with the animal in a safe location until law enforcement arrives. The person may not leave the scene.
What if you see a dog in a hot car?  Not sure how to determine signs of heat-related distress?

  • Anxiety
  • Wide eyes
  • Fervent barking as if in distress
  • Intense scratching or digging at windows or doors trying to escape
  • Excessive panting with exaggerated long tongue
  • Extreme drooling, salivating
  • Change in color of the gums (blueish purple, bright red or pale from lack of oxygen)
  • Increased heart rate
  • Labored or trouble breathing
  • Disorientation, stumbling or poor coordination
  • Diarrhea or vomiting
  • Collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Seizure
  • Respiratory arrest
  • Coma

Dogs and their food – why are their tummies upset?

More and more of my dog clients have been having food issues – allergies and stomach concerns – even being “prescribed” or “recommended” foods only found at the vet’s office.  Dog food is big business and I believe fillers are being used to make more money, with less nutritional value for the dogs.  (I have not found the same issues with my cat clients – but if you are having a concern with allergies or stomach issues this message will apply.) Please understand I do believe in Western, Eastern and Holistic healing methods –when appropriate.  However, when I look at the first five ingredients in many of these “recommended” by the vet, “can only get at the vet’s office” products, I have a problem.

Check out the first five ingredients on the labels as they are listed by volume content.  Do you know what they are?  Are they real and nutritious food (i.e. meat, vegetable or vitamin) or fillers with words that include wheat, whey, corn, grain, meal, flour?  If you don’t know what an ingredient is, look it up – I did this while with a client.  We discovered the definition of the item was “no nutritional value, added to pet food as filler.”

I highly recommend checking out the Blue Buffalo brand.  I am not endorsed by them or paid by them.  I have just found my clients are very happy when they are fed products by this company.  I know there are other great brands out there – read the labels – that is my message to you.

Why does my dog bark and lunge at the TV?

I am finding it more and more prevalent with my clients this past year or so.  Our TVs are getting bigger and bigger and the resolution is just so life like that our pets think they are real people, with real issues and "they are talking about ME!!!

When I speak with the animals, I try to stay within a “child-like” view of the world.  They are very simple beings who see things on face value – in this case the faces on this “box” that are talking about them, threatening them or possibly a threat to their family.  They may bark or lunge at the TV thinking they are in “protective mode” – or fearful of the people coming out of the box and into their home.

I explain to them that the stories they hear on this box are make-believe or stories based on someone else’s life.  I assure them they and their family are safe from the voices they hear and people they see on the box.

Billy's Message from the Other Side

Frances:  Hi Billy –how are you?

Billy:  I’m fine – I wish mom would stop blaming herself.   She did nothing wrong.  She did everything she could and more.  My body was only going to last just so long.

It saddens me to see her so upset – thank you for talking with her.  She
was the perfect mom – I know she didn’t think so – but she made the best food and served it with love.  Love was all around – she had so much to share with
me.  I want her now to share that love with herself.  To treat herself like she did me – even half as much would be so good for her. Please tell her I love her very much and will always love her.  I will always be in her heart and she can call on me whenever she wants me by her side.

Please tell her to light a candle for me tonight and know that when it goes out – I will still be around her in her heart.  She will never be forgotten – she was the best mom a dog could ever have.

Frances:  Thank you, Billy – I will share this with your mom.

Billy:  You’re welcome and thank you from all of us on this side of the veil.
