George Has Had Enough

George is an 8-year-old Chihuahua mix who was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, developed cataracts, and is now blind.  His vet ordered Insulin injections twice per day, and he hates them.  My client wants to do the best for George medically but also knows how much he hates the shots.  She will do whatever George wants her to do.

Frances:  Hi George – how are you?

George:  Oh, ok, I guess.

Frances:  I understand you have lost your sight, and Mom has to poke you twice a day.  How do you feel about all that happening to you?

George:  I hate it, I hate it, I hate it.  Why do I have to go through this?  What kind of life is this?  I know Mom loves me and wants to do the best for me.  But I don’t want to exist like this.  I can’t play like I used to or enjoy my walk to see the other dogs and people.  It has taken away my world of enjoyment and experience.  Do I have to continue like this?

Frances:  Honey, I will talk with Mom about the next steps, so you won’t have to live like this, if your mom agrees, of course.  She doesn’t want you to suffer any more than you have to and understands you don’t want those shots anymore.

George:  Thank you for telling me that.  I love Mom so very much, but this isn’t living, it’s just existing, and I’m ready to be done with it.

Frances:  I will be talking with Mom soon and share your message.  Bye for now.

George:  Bye and thank you for talking with me.

Frances:  My pleasure, George.

Frances
