I recently had a session for a client with two cats.  This is how it went. 

Frances:  Hi Sally – how are you?
Sally:  I’m ok, why?
Frances:  Your mom asked me if I would talk with you, is that ok?  
Sally:  Yeah, I guess so, what about?  
Frances:  Do you like your new family?  I understand you have been there for about a year.
Sally:  It’s ok, but why did that other cat have to come too?
Frances:  Missy needed a home just like you did.  She is now your sister, why can’t you be nice to her?
Sally:  Why should I be nice to her?  She’ll take all my food.  
Frances:  There will always be enough food for you and Missy.  Your mom will always ensure you are both taken care of with a roof over your head and food in your tummies.  Do you know that you are loved, and this is your forever home?  
Sally:  What do you mean by “forever home”?  I’ve never been in one home for very long at all.  I’d get in a fight and that was it, I was moved to another place, then another, then another.  I don’t trust anyone anymore and that’s a fact.
Frances:  I’m sorry you haven’t had the kind of life you deserve.  But you do know if you’ll allow your mom to love you like you deserve to be loved you have it now.  A forever home is where you will stay for the rest of your life.  You will have the same home with your mom and sister named Missy.  This is your forever family, and it is there for you to open your heart and love and be loved.  Does that make sense? 
Sally:  I think so but how can I believe you?
Frances:  Just give it time.  You don’t have to take my words only, just allow each day to unfold with the knowing that you are loved, you have plenty of food in your tummy, and a roof over your head for your safety.  Can you do that?  
Sally:  I suppose I can try.  
Frances:  Good for you, that’s taking a positive step forward.  One step at a time, right?
Sally:  Yeah, ok – I see what you’re doing here.  I know I’ve put up a good wall to protect myself, I’ve had to.  Nobody did anything for me just because they wanted to.  I always felt like a burden, and they let me know it.  I liked being outside because then I didn’t have to deal with the people and their problems.  They yelled and screamed all the time at each other, and I just got in the way.  I do have to say my life here is nothing like that and I really do appreciate all that I am given, really, I do.  I was afraid it would be a repeat of the past and I would be moving on to another place, so I didn’t want to get my hopes up and open my heart just to get broken again, so I stopped trying.  I see that it is different this time and now that you mention it, I do feel I can relax more and allow the love they have to offer to sink in.  Yeah, even with Missy, I think I can do that too.  Thank you for talking with me, I do appreciate your words very much.

Summertime Adventures!

It’s almost summertime and for the first time in years I am going to go on a vacation – a real vacation!  I’ll be gone for almost two weeks and my first concern is:  who is going to take care of my two cats?  I have been planning this trip for a very long time – a 10-day cruise through Italy, Greece, and Croatia. 

Will my cats miss me?  Of course, they will.  And I will miss them.  We have our morning and evening routines – each cat has her special spots to pet, places to rest and one always licks the spoon after I clear the cat food can.  My friend will be here to stay with them and enjoy the quiet that my home provides.  She has been here a few times and they know her sounds and smells and she has a very calm soul. 

One of my cats, Ollie, is very curious once someone is here long enough to allow her to come up to them without moving.  Sage watches from afar and that is usually from under the comforter (her happy place when anyone else is in our home).  They know something is up as the items to be packed are gathered all over the bedroom and the suitcase is out.  I tell them (as I tell my clients to do too) that I will be gone but my friend is coming to stay with them so they will be just fine.  I tell them how many times the sun will go down until I return.  They will be in their home with their favorite toys and lots of their favorite food to eat.

Summer is Near - Traveling with Pets?

As things feel like they are returning to normal, at least a new normal, going out and enjoying new adventures are in order.  With the sunny summer travels approaching, it’s so important to remember our furry four-legged friends.  When you take them on your car ride adventures, please consider their safety.  We use seat belts, and they should too for their safety as well.   Like children, sitting on your lap with the car moving, whether you are the driver or the passenger – is not safe if you have to stop short or God forbid, were in an accident.  

If you have a smaller size pet, consider the basket type where they can see out the window while being safely strapped in.  There are other strapping devices for larger pets who may sit in the back seat with the window cracked open for their nose to stick out (I just love seeing the wind blowing in their face and the hair blowing back).  Please be careful not to have the window open too much so they don’t fall out.  If your pet rides in the back bed of the truck – please consider harnessing them in with more than a single leash connected to their collar.  (I don’t want to think what can happen should they try to jump out).  Have fun, enjoy the new adventures of this phase for you and your pet’s life.

Pets are Like Children

Our pets are like children, they watch us and sometimes their brains don’t understand all the complexities about adults. When we are affectionate to our partner we may have sounds or actions that can sound or look like we are being hurt. We know this isn’t the case, but to a pet or a child, this can be very scary. They may be in protection mode or run and hide. If they can do that to him or her, what will happen to me? I’m so small, who’s going to protect me? Who can I trust? Best they are not placed in this situation when they are young or if a relationship is in the early stages. Pets get very confused about who they can trust, and this can then be projected to others who they thought they could trust. Assure them your partner is a good person by including them in quiet times, walks, throwing the ball and words – yes, they do understand your words. 

 You may not hear their responses like I do but be assured they understand your words and your kindness. You are all they have – be kind.

Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

It’s Spring Time!  Spring clearing and cleaning – where is all this stuff going?  My favorite chair to sit on, under and behind.  Strangers coming in to take things away and fixing stuff.  Why?  Sage and Ollie my two 4-year-old female cats are asking.  Sage is taking a new hiding place on top of the refrigerator – behind the cereal box or on the kitchen countertop behind the paper towel holder - maybe if she can’t see them, they can’t see her? I am going through drawers, closets, and the garage.  The stuff has been collecting for at least the 18 years I have been in my condo.  I am simplifying and releasing.  I have to reassure the cats when things leave, that they (the cats) are staying.  I have been revisiting the emotional attachment to things and as the Marie Kondo method – does it bring me joy?  My home has been my sanctuary for a year now – safe from the outside world of uncertainty.  My cats did not understand why I didn’t leave each day like I used to.  I explained to them that life is changing, and we have to share the dining room chairs (their favorite sleeping spots).  My dining room table holds my work laptop next to my personal laptop.  They had to get used to that and adjust too.

I am an only child and I do enjoy my alone time – but I have come to realize that I am happy wherever I call my home.  I will be beginning a new chapter of my life – March 31^st is the last day of my day job.  I will be free to speak with the animals wherever my heart takes me – in my time and space.  It may be April 1^st – April Fool’s Day - but I am no fool and I fool nobody.  My time will be free to be all of me.  For me - and for the animals.

Conversation with Bear

Bear

Frances: Hi Bear – how are you?  

huh? Who are you?  

Frances: I’m a friend of your mom.  She asked if I could talk with you.

oh ok.  

Frances: Honey I know you are a puppy and have so much energy.  Your mom is concerned when you don’t listen to her.  She and the family love you very much.  

Why did they send me away?

Frances: They sent you to a special puppy school to learn your manners.  To learn how to behave with your family.  To learn to go pee and poo outside.  

So are they going to send me away again?

Frances: No honey – they love you and want you to stay in their family.  It is important that you behave by not jumping or biting anyone.  The people who come to your house are friendly and not going to harm anyone.  Does that make sense to you?  

I guess so but I thought I was supposed to protect them.  

Frances: You are honey, but only when there is a danger – not everyone is bad, everyone is good until they show you otherwise.  To let mom know someone is there you can do one bark.  If there is danger then you can bark more – no jumping or biting on anyone.  

What is my job then?  

Frances: Your job is to be a loving companion for the boys and Quinn.  

But Quinn doesn’t play back.

Frances: I know honey that’s because he is older – but be kind to him ok?)  

ok so I can play with the boys?

Frances: Yes honey – but outside – not in the house – you need to be a gentle dog in the house.  No running or horseplay in the house.  Please calm down when you are inside.  

What does “calm” mean?

Frances: Taking things slower – walk slower, move slower, behave in a slower way.  Take your time eating, there will always be enough food for you.  Share your toys with Quinn – even if he doesn’t act like he wants to play – show him you will share with him. 

There are lots of toys and the food is really good.  Is it ok if I sit next to mom when she is working or talking on the phone?

Frances: If you are still and quiet I’m sure mom won’t mind. She loves you very much and want you to be a loving part of the family.  Please understand they chose you because you are special – they love you very much.

Wow – so I’m not going to have to live anyplace else? This is my home for real?  

Frances: Yes honey – this is your home and your family – and love them as much as they love you.  Do you think you can do that?

Yes – oh thank you for talking with me.  

Frances: You’re very welcome Bear – bye bye.

Alert! Vets Warn About Treats Poisoning Pets

"Petco, one of the country's largest pet retailers, announced Monday that it has pulled all Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its shelves, citing concerns that the foreign made pet foods could be linked to a series of yet unexplained sicknesses and deaths among pet dogs in the United States. The move, the first by a national pet store, comes despite the FDA's inability to tie the illnesses specifically to Chinese-made pet foods. Its the perfect time for your family to adopt a new pet from Orange County's OC Animal Care, the county run animal services center.  Adoption fees will be waived for qualified applicants.

Based in the city of Orange, the OC Animal Care is county run, and has been operating at over 95-percent capacity for nearly a month, since they took in a large quantity of rabbits from an area residence.

The facility is currently housing approximately 630 animals.

According to the shelter, that is over 200 more animals than the services typically works with.

“High numbers of animals increases the impact on the physical and mental health of shelter animals,” Dr. Jennifer Hawkins, director of OC Animal Care said. “By removing fee barriers to adoption and encouraging visitors to the shelter, it is our goal to unite adoptable shelter pets with families.”

On October 25, the Orange County supervisors agreed in unanimous vote to authorize OC Animal Care to waive adoption fees anytime its animal population grows more than 80 percent of capacity. The free fees will continue until it drops below 60 percent.

Adoption fees normally average $167 for dogs, $171 for cats and $77 for rabbits.

That cost covers spaying and neutering animals, veterinary services, implanting and registering microchips, and administering vaccinations.

Take note, even with the fee waiver, adoptive families of their new pets will still have to pay for a rabies-vaccination certificate to the tune of $27.

No animals can be surrendered at the shelter until the number of animals in residence drops back to 60-percent.

Bob's Unusual Pet Family

Luiz Higa Junior of São Paulo, Brazil, says that his golden retriever, Bob, is a little less than two years old. In the beginning, he just had Bob, a cockatiel and a parakeet. 

“Since the beginning I put them together to see their behavior,” he tells us. “It was nice, so I decided to have them play together sometimes during my free time.” 

He then added more birds and a hamster to the group.  You can now see the group posing, playing, exploring, and resting together.

What is a Telephone Reading?

If you are not sure how a telephone reading works, here is a brief overview, and also answers to some commonly asked questions.

Telephone readings are the same as those when your pet is in the same room with me…as it would be when I tune in to those pets that have crossed over.  I am tuning in to your pet’s energy telepathically and hearing the dog's thinking voice to my thinking sound.  Many times their voice sounds like the owner’s voice or accent. 

I speak to animals for clients in Japan - whose language is Japanese - but using telepathy I hear their responses in English and speak to the animals in English - yet they hear the information in Japanese (or “dog” language) – I don’t really know!

Contrary to popular belief I do not require the pet to be physically present. There is a misconception that I somehow read the information from the pet in front of me or even their picture, which is not true – it is as said previously, telepathically.

When people sit down with me, I immediately advise them not to be put off by the lack of sound when I am tuning in to their pet.   The pet and I are in conversation and I will share what I receive when we are finished with the topic at hand.  Sometimes I close my eyes to not be distracted by those around me.   I need to focus on the pet, in the way one would pay attention to any conversation.

During a phone sitting the pet gives me the information to pass on to you, just as they would if you were in the same room, except that I am relaying the message to you via the telephone.

This is very obvious when you think about it; how can being in the same room as me make a difference to your pet who is communicating with you through me?  Especially for those pets who have crossed over – they are just so happy to give their message to you – my physical location is completely irrelevant.

I ask that you write questions for me so you have them ready for the appointment. I will need the name, type of animal (breed), sex, age (or if they have crossed over), how long you have had them, and if there is a particular concern or question I can answer when I first tune in.   It is best not to have any noisy distractions that will be annoying to your pet, or to you.

Phone sittings are a convenient way of avoiding traffic and travel time, and you can (hopefully) relax afterwards.

Whisker’s auntie Lisa thinks that the one on the top looks like her with the big hair. Someone else said it looks like lil orphan Annie.  Some pre-teens we polled thinks the two on the right look like the evolution of Michael Jackson's style!

What does my parakeet think of living here with us?

The winner of the newsletter question contest has a 10 year old parakeet named Pulsipher.  She works with a parakeet rescue group and her question for him is...

"What do you think of living here with us?"

Pulsipher is thankful to have a caring family, he has all the comforts a bird could ask for.  He just wonders why there are so many birds coming and going - his concerned was that he would be the next one "going".  I explained to him that his family cares for birds that are in between loving homes and assured him that this is his forever home. I felt a sign of relief from Pulsipher.

Working with rescues and fostering animals is such a loving way to help those animals looking for their forever home.  Fostering takes a special kind of heart...my heart wants to take them all in...unfortunately my two cats Harmony and Itty Bitty have set their boundaries in my little condo. 

Why is my dog nervous in the car?

A dog who is nervous in the car - and anxious when the owner leaves the house without them. This dog was a rescue who was "left" somewhere and the family never returned for him. Be sure to always say where you are going and assure him you will be back (i.e. groomer, daycare, aunt Susie's). When you leave the house always say when you will be back (e.i. to feed you dinner, when the sun goes down). Since they don't know time per se they know when they are feeling hungry, or are visual when it gets dark for understanding the concept of time.

Adopting a New Pet

Adopting a new pet after one has transitioned can be tricky, especially when there is a surviving companion grieving the loss. When is it ok? Grieving appears with signs such as loss of appetite, lack of desire to thrive and sleeping more than usual. Just like humans, the animals grieve the loss of a loved one.

In doing this work of animal communication, I have found the pets who stay behind, while in their grief, or even a year or two later, can be very possessive of their owners. Introducing a new pet, without asking them first, can create havoc. There can be jealousy of the new pet or anger at you for bringing in another. How can you replace their dear companion?

When my client is thinking of bringing in another pet, after the loss of a dear companion, I tune in to the surviving companion for guidance. Have they cleared the grieving process? Is there anger towards the owner for "taking their companion" away? Do they understand the death process? Are they seeing their companion's spirit around them?

To present the idea of a new pet into the home, I broach the subject with compassion. I ask the pet if they would mind another companion who is homeless? Will they allow their owner to assist another pet and bring them into their home to share their love? This approach appeals to their compassion for the other pet instead of seeing them as competition for the owner's attention, love, food or toys. I assure them there will be enough attention, love, food and toys for both of them.

I also ask if they have a preference: a two-year-old cat versus a kitten, a female versus a male. Yes, the animals have their preferences if they are asked.

My Story of Animal Communication - Frances W. Greenspan

This is the first in a series of blogs regarding my experiences as an Animal Communicator. I am writing a book that will be out shortly...here is an excerpt:

Communication with the animals has become one of the greatest joys of my life. I believe that communicating with animals is my true calling and it was no mistake that I was named Frances, as St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint of animals and the environment. Growing up as an only child, my dogs and cats were my first playmates.

Sitting on my porch while writing my story, two pigeons were deciding who was going to feed out of the larger dish. One was sitting in the dish, the other on the outside. I telepathically told the birds there was a second dish of food. The one on the outside flew over to it and happily ate from it. I love this work! It is a gift from God.

I give voices to those who can’t say what they want or need. Of course, they do try in their own way verbally and with their behavior. I am able to telepathically hear the words in their very own voice – accents, tones and emotions included. Sometimes they show me pictures, express emotions (such as fear or happiness) or show me ailments (such as making my head spin when they are having a seizure).

They have personalities and egos – power struggles and preferences. They have fears and anxieties that they have from their life experiences – when they were taken from their mother, taken in, left on the street, left in a field or abused behind closed doors. Many are fearful of certain uniforms, males or females – based on the abuse they have endured in their short lives.

Animals don’t live as long as humans, so they pack lots of emotion into their short life span. Their attitude is based on their home life and the attitudes of their owner or siblings (including all of those in the household – human and animal).

I believe animals are part of our “pod” so to speak. We have people and animals from our life span and previous lives. We stay together in this “pod” – coming in different incarnations to learn various lessons.

Our pets join us for various reasons, karmic lessons included. I recently read for a gentleman who felt guilty over having to give his three year old German shepherd to his nephew as he was moving and could no longer keep him. This loving dog asked me to tell him he should let the guilt go as this was his lesson. He had been very controlling earlier in his lifetime, by releasing this dog with love he had also released his need to control others and the outcome of his life.



Animals can pick up on their owner’s feelings and emotions, often manifesting their owner’s symptoms, in order to alleviate their discomfort, taking on the illnesses themselves. Knowing when the owner is ill and holding the energy for them until they are healed.

One client, an 80 yr old woman, has a cat who went blind, prior to her own cataract surgery that was very successful.

Animals hold the energy for us – whether it is for our physical, emotional or spiritual well-being. They come into our lives for more reasons than we consciously know. Our pets are aware of what we are going through from a telepathic level. We may not say out loud that we are worried about paying the bills, but our pets know and take on some of the anxiety from us – and for us.
