My client contacted me regarding their cat. Mallory is a 7-year-old female cat, who was adopted by her husband as a very young kitten before she came into his life. Mallory has always been a little sassy toward her, and she’d love to understand her better.
Frances: Hi Mallory – how are you? Mallory: I’m ok, why? Who are you? What do you want? Frances: I’m a friend of your mom and dad and they asked me to talk with you. Is that ok? Mallory: I guess so, what about? Frances: Do you know you are loved by your mom and dad? Mallory: Well, I know my dad, but I’m not so sure about who you call “Mom”. Why is she here? Frances: Your dad fell in love with your mom and married her, so she joined your family. She makes Dad happy. Don’t you want your dad to be happy? Mallory: I suppose so, but I liked it when it was just him and me. I guess that’s not going to change, is it? Frances: No, Mallory, it’s not going to change. Please know you are loved, and your mom wants you to be happy in your home, too. What can she do to help you be happier in your home? Mallory: I would like my own Dad time, even just a little in the morning. Frances: I think that is perfectly reasonable. Do you miss your brother Wasabi? Mallory: Of course I do. Why did they have to bring in the other cat? Frances: First of all, the other cat needed a home just like you did before your dad adopted you. Your mom and dad thought you would be lonely without Wasabi, and the new cat would be a companion. Not a replacement for Wasabi, but a companion for you. Do you not like the new cat? Mallory: I suppose it’s not their fault, but I haven’t been the nicest to the new cat. Ok, I’ll give them a chance. You’re right, it’s not their fault they’re here. Frances: Thank you, Mallory. Can you please use the litter box instead of just outside the box? You don’t have to punish your mom and dad anymore, right? Mallory: Yeah, I guess I could lighten up some. But I’m still the boss of the new cat. I was here first. Frances: You can be the boss as long as you are nice and understanding to the new cat. Mallory: Yeah, I can do that. Frances: Is there anything else you want to tell your mom and dad? Mallory: Please tell them I’m sorry for being a brat. I will do better and say sorry to Mom. I guess I wasn’t ready for my life to change when you came into it. I’ll do better there, too. I guess I just need to relax and be grateful for what I have here in my life and my home. Thank you for talking to me. I guess I was holding in all this anger for no good reason. I appreciate your kind words to me, and I promise I will do better. Frances: You’re very welcome, Mallory. I know you will keep your word, and you will be happier because of it. I’ll be talking to Mom and Dad later this morning. Bye for now. Mallory: Bye and thank you again. Frances: My pleasure, Mallory.
